Serving more than 1,700 hospitals and more than 49,000 other health care sites, the Premier health care alliance is working to transform health care. Owned by not-for-profit hospitals, Premier operates one of the largest health care purchasing networks. It also has the nation's largest comprehensive repository of hospital clinical and financial information, as well as labor productivity management and comprehensive consulting solutions. A subsidiary operates one of the nation's largest policy-holder owned, hospital professional liability risk-retention groups. Premier is working with the United Kingdom's National Health Service North West region to implement a model pay-for-performance program, dubbed "Advancing Quality." Established to improve the health of communities, Premier and its members are transforming health care together.
The Premier health care purchasing network serves 1,550 hospitals and health system as well as nearly 50,000 other health care delivery sites and is committed to accelerating members' financial performance through improvements and enhancements in all aspects of the health care supply chain.
The strength of Premier's portfolio—some 1,300 contracts with approximately 800 contracted suppliers—is reflected in its purchasing volume of $33 billion. With Premier as our national group purchasing organization partner, we offer our members the most competitive national contract pricing in the industry. We can further enhance these prices for our members through our landmark purchasing model. Since our region is unlike any other in the country with its geographic density of health care facilities, why shouldn't our prices reflect that?
Premier's long-standing commitment to performance excellence was recognized in 2006 when it received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s highest presidential honor award to organizations for performance excellence. We are proud to call Premier our partner.
Background
Premier was selected as our national group purchasing partner in 2004, after a rigorous selection process supervised by Giuliani Partners, LLC—the consulting firm headed by former New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani. In 2006, Giuliani Partners evaluated the program's progress, finding an average of approximately 10% savings for medical/surgical supplies and food, 2% savings on pharmaceuticals, and an overall average savings of more than 5%. This pricing advantage has continually improved over the years of our relationship.
